Tetbury wins a

SILVER-GILT

in the
RHS Britain in Bloom Finals 2011

The results of the Britain in Bloom Campaign 2011 were announced in St Andrews on 26th September. Tetbury was a Finalist this year, having been nominated to compete against the very best Small Towns in the UK after being declared Overall Winner in the Heart of England in Bloom last year.

This year is the second time Tetbury has reached the Britain in Bloom Finals.  We achieved a Silver Gilt at our first entry in 2009. This year, as you might expect, we were hoping for Gold. Again we were awarded a Silver-Gilt. According to the RHS Judges we were, again, very close to a Gold this year.

After another year of truly tremendous support from the community of Tetbury and some resounding successes, such as the new wildflower meadow at Cutwell, ongoing improvements to St Mary’s Churchyard and new-look hanging baskets, the mood is one of disappointment tinged with immense pride in what the team and the community of Tetbury have achieved.

Such a fantastic set of results, not just in the Bloom campaign but in the improvements to the look and feel of our town, is a testament to the community of Tetbury, particularly the hard work and dedication of the Tetbury in Bloom team, the many helpers who join us to help maintain and improve our town, the many local organisations, clubs and societies with whom we have links and common goals and everyone who has supported us, in whatever way.

We owe special thanks to the army of volunteers who turned out to help the Tetbury in Bloom team in the last few weeks before judging.

Thank you all, and very well done!

Now then; on with the work of keeping Tetbury looking great in 2012.

About Tetbury

Tetbury has been an influential Market Town on the southern fringe of the Cotswolds since the middle ages with it being part of the prosperous ‘Golden Triangle’ based around the woollen trade, in particular the sale of sheep and raw wool. Many rich merchants lived in the town centre and their stylish homes are still evident in the lower parts of Long Street and in The Chipping.

The working population also lived in and around the centre of the town and the many rows of dwellings and single cottages date back to the 18th Century. Typical English cottage gardens feature strongly around the town and are emulated in the planting style of many of the floral displays around the town.

Tetbury is still a Market Town although the type of products on offer have changed somewhat over the centuries. Nowadays, the antiques trade plays an important part in the town’s trading scene occupying many of the conserved properties, together with independent retailers, including fashions not available on every high street and the very best in food. For many, the  emphasis is on the excellence of local produce, for others the finest that the rest of the world has to offer. Either way, Tetbury is a great place to dress,  to cook and to eat!

Our local Tetbury in Bloom campaign has played an important part in the town’s revitalisation programme creating a sense of civic pride and participation.

Our website shows the many projects that our team of volunteers have completed making Tetbury a much cleaner and more colourful place to live, work and visit.
