Murals

St Mary’s Primary School Murals

In 2009 to celebrate our entry to the national finals of Britain in Bloom and to improve the look of a derelict gap site on the judging route, we asked St Mary’s Primary School to create us a mural that could be erected onto the gates of the Matbro site in London Road.

This they willingly did and taking the theme from the Heart of England in Bloom’s children’s art competition – ‘My Garden’, a competition was held to find the best design.

The site owners Builders Ede Ltd were approached and asked if we could erect the mural and also if they would sponsor the cost of the boards. They too agreed to our request and by the end of June the first mural, designed by Leomi Potter and painted by many of the children was completed and erected in London Road.

Everyone was thrilled with the results and Leomi and several of the children who helped to paint it were there on judging day to proudly show it off to the judges.

In late 2009 the mural was taken down and permanently fixed to the front wall of St Mary’s Primary School.

In 2010 on entering the Heart of England in Bloom campaign, we still had the same problem of improving the look of the disused site.

So, again the children of St Mary’s were asked to create a mural – this time using the Heart of England in Bloom’s children’s painting competition theme of ‘The Seasons’. Builders Ede Ltd again generously donated the boards and a competition to find the best design took place amongst the school children.

Emilia Thomas won the honour of having her design enlarged to fit the eight 8’x4’ boards and all the children with the assistance of teacher Kate Thompson and our own Kevin Farnham, helped paint it. In June the new mural was erected on the gates of the Matbro site and once again the residents and judges were thrilled with the results.

In early 2011, the second mural was also mounted on one of the walls of St Mary’s Primary School.

With Tetbury a Britain in Bloom Finalist again in 2011 we set the school children the task of creating the third mural.

The theme for the design was ‘Tetbury in Bloom’, with the aim of producing something that is very recognisably Tetbury, including Tetbury landmarks, but adorned by flowers.

The pupils from St Mary’s, again supported by Kate Thompson, produced lots of wonderful drawings and paintings of Tetbury landmarks and flowers—so good that selecting which ones to include in the mural (and so which to leave out) was horribly difficult.

The final design was a collage of three pictures of landmarks: Chipping Steps, The Market Hall and St Mary’s Church viewed from the ford at Cutwell; plus two very recognisable Tetbury characters, a Woolsack runner and the Town Crier in all his regalia.

Again we turned the design into a mammoth “painting by numbers” kit and the pupils from St Mary’s did a great job in bringing the design to life. We think it looks brilliant, the best yet!
