In March 2005 a new Tetbury in Bloom ‘Committee’ was formed to help improve the appearance of the town and since then the town has gone from strength to strength. After just four months in 2005 the new team of eight members raised the award in the Heart of England in Bloom competition from Silver to Silver Gilt. In 2006, with new recruits, the team almost doubled in size and the extra effort paid off when we achieved the first of five consecutive Gold awards, succeeding again in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010. In 2008, 2009 and 2010 we not only achieved Gold, but won the Small Town category. In 2008 we were nominated for the finals in the 2009 Britain in Bloom campaign and did extremely well for a first-time entrant, with a Silver Gilt Award and nomination for two of the Judges Discretionary Awards. In 2010, we were Overall Winner in the Heart of England in Bloom and again nominated for the Britain in Bloom Finals in 2011 when we achieved another Silver Gilt. With all this success, we are proudest of the recognition we have achieved for our local community and how they have supported and been inspired by us. In 2010 we received the Community Achievement Award from the Heart of England in Bloom and were nominated for the Britain in Bloom Community Award in 2009. Thank you and “well done” to all. Now the team is made up of eleven ‘hands-on’ volunteers each fiercely committed to making Tetbury look and feel a better place to live in and visit. We can often be seen working, usually heads down and bottoms up wearing our high visibility jackets emblazoned with ’Tetbury in Bloom’. These not only address obvious safety issues but wearing them also acts as a highly visible advertisement for ourselves. Stephen & Sue Hirst Stephen was Mayor of Tetbury from 2005 to 2010 and a driving force behind improving the look of the town. He instigated the formation of the new ‘committee’ and is an active ‘hands on’ member of the team. Sue is one of the original members of the 2005 team. Her specific role is ‘Plant Co-ordinator’ and as such, designs all the flower beds and chooses the plants. In September 2007 she became ‘Team Leader’. In 2008 she was awarded a Certificate of Outstanding Merit from the Heart of England in Bloom for successfully spearheading the Tetbury in Bloom campaign and for her horticultural flair. Ian & Mel Maslin Both are original members of the 2005 team and helped create the first two ‘sustainable’ beds in Tetbury at The Knapp and Braybrooke Close. Mel’s specific role on the team is ‘Treasurer’. Liz & Kevin Farnham Liz & Kevin joined the team in 2006. They are both actively involved in the St Mary’s Primary School Garden Club which won a Certificate of Merit in the 2007 Heart of England in Bloom Competition. Liz’s specific role on the team is ‘Publicity’ and as such she writes a monthly article about the plans and achievements of Tetbury in Bloom which appears in The Tetbury Advertiser. (see Newsletters) She also liaises with the local Press. Kevin’s specific role is ’Photographer’ and he makes sure we have a visual record of all our work. He also manages the website. Mike Kniveton Mike joined the team in 2006. Like all the members he is a keen amateur gardener and became involved after entering his garden into the local Tetbury in Bloom competition. Pete & Ange Morrissey Pete and Ange joined in May 2007. Both are keen gardeners and very ’hands on’. Ange now works hand in hand with Sue designing and creating all our floral displays and Pete is a power house for when we need heavy duty practical assistance. They were both the driving force behind the new trees being planted in the long stay car park in West Street. Frances Collinson Frances joined the team this year and is proving to be a real asset. Emma Thomas Emma is our newest and youngest member. She‘s been invaluable in keeping the new plants in the churchyard watered on a regular basis. Janet Hedley Janet joined the team as a casual volunteer in the run up to the 2009 judging for Britain in Bloom whilst trying to avoid the builders installing her new kitchen. Now totally ‘hooked’, she has become a regular team member and her deadheading skills are second to none! Kirsty Taylor Kirsty joined the team in Autumn 2009, having seen the work we’d all put in during the run up to Britain in Bloom. She was so impressed she felt she wanted to join in and help us “make a difference” too. She now joins the day team work parties on most Tuesdays and Thursdays. Dee Buss Dee is our latest member to join the regular volunteers in the run up to the Britain in Bloom judging 2011. (Retired Members) Doreen & Eric Simpson Doreen & Eric also joined the team in 2006. Eric almost single-handedly transformed The Anniversary Garden which is a small green space located between the Chippings and The Ferns.
Join the team! If you’d like to join the team or just fancy lending us a hand on one of the work parties, you’ll be more than welcome. Contact Sue Hirst on 01666 504213 or e-mail her on sue@tetburyinbloom.org.uk
