Tetbury in Bloom

IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT FLOWERS. It’s also about…..

Keeping our environment clean...

The Tetbury in Bloom campaign isn’t all just about flowers. It follows the criteria set out by the RHS in caring for the environment in which we all live.

We work in partnership with the council to keep street side property clean and usable, and with other organisations within the town we help clean the streets of weeds, litter, graffiti and dog fouling.

Preserving or creating natural areas...

In 2009 we started a long term project to create a wildflower haven with in St Mary’s Churchyard.  IHS Energy have kindly donated £800 for the purchase of wildflowers and bulbs.  In the first year we planted over 300 perennial wildflowers including knapweed, ox-eye daisies, toadflax, bird’s foot trefoil, meadow cranesbill, scabious, cyclamen, native bluebells and snowdrops. In Autumn 2010 a further 600 cyclamen, 400 aconites, 500 bluebells and 500 fritillaries were added.  The churchyard is already home to thousands of wild primula.

Other areas in the town have been set aside as wildlife havens and nature conservation areas. These include the Rail Land which follows the course of the original railway line to Cirencester (closed in 1964), Cooks Pool (alongside London Road) which is a disused cart wash and the Magdalen Meadow Spring in Tesco’s car park

Bird, bat and owl nesting boxes are positioned in strategic places around the town including St Marys’ Churchyard, The Anniversary Garden, St Mary’s Primary School & Lower Chipping Green. Pipistrelle bats are common place in and around the town and can be seen most evenings during the Summer months. We also provide a haven for a rarer Lesser Horseshoe bat that has been discovered residing in the Goods Shed on the Rail Land.

Reducing waste ...

We have already adopted a sustainable planting theme in our flower beds which reduces the cost, waste and water requirements.

Composting is an excellent way of reducing Landfill and is good for wildlife and we have worked closely with Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust compost officers to promote the benefits of home composting.

As part of our churchyard project we have built a large compost area to take all the green waste that we generate over the season. The resulting produce will in turn not only create our own source of compost but it will save on future costs.
