IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT FLOWERS. It’s also about…..Encouraging the community to get involvedThis is probably the biggest achievement we have made since we started in 2005. When we first ventured out in our reflective jackets and worked on the beds, the main comments we received were “Why are you doing this?, we thought it was the Council’s job”. Since then our profile has grown and grown and not only are people aware of what we do, they can see what we have achieved and are joining in. The main comments we receive now are how wonderful they think the town looks and how much they appreciate all the hard work we put in. Our high profile, the wonderful comments and the success we have achieved, not only fuels our enthusiasm but it has inspired others to get involved in many ways. St Mary’s Primary SchoolThe children at St Mary’s Primary School have created their own gardening club, wildlife pond and sensory garden. They now produce their own fruit & vegetables and have gained the knowledge of plant science, wildlife management and of course the knowledge of where food comes from. In 2007 they were awarded a Certificate of Merit from the Heart of England in Bloom judges for their achievements. In 2008 they assisted us in the planting of over 30 trees in Preston Park to the rear of the football ground in Cirencester Road. In 2009 and 2010 to celebrate Tetbury’s entries to Britain in Bloom and Heart of England in Bloom campaigns, they created the murals that adorned the gates of the Matbro site in London Road and hid the derelict site behind. These have been wonderfully successful and both are now proudly mounted on the walls of the school. For 2011 we were even more ambitious and produced a mural that is a real celebration of Tetbury, with landmarks and local characters, festooned with flowers; all drawn and painted by children from St Mary’s Primary School. Girl Guides, Scouts and The Lions ClubEvery year the Girl Guides and Scouts have come to help us weed the Chipping Steps and the Girl Guides plant the John Phillips memorial trough on the Millennium Green. The Lions Club organise their annual clean up and for the past 3 years have come out and helped us sweep, weed and clean the roads in preparation for judging day . The Lions also maintain Sam’s Memorial bed in the Recreation Ground. Residents GroupsResidents groups have sprung up wishing to improve the look of their neighbourhoods. The residents of West Street clubbed together to buy 5 ornamental pear trees to soften the look of the West Street car park. The type of trees were specifically chosen to match those that had been planted in the adjacent Old Brewery Lane car park by TRH the Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall in 2006 to commemorate the Queen’s 80th birthday. Residents in Chavenage Lane also bought and planted over 300 daffodil bulbs to brighten up their verges in Spring.
