What we did Last Year (2011)

Tree Planting Event at Sir William Romney School With the support of Caroline Morgan, The Mayor of Tetbury, Steven Mackay headmaster of Sir William Romney’s, Cotswold Warden Richard Glanville and his colleagues, children from both Sir William Romney’s and St Mary’s Primary schools and members of The Lions, to mark the launch of the 2011 Britain in Bloom campaign and ‘The Big Tree Plant’ we have arranged to plant 105 native saplings along the boundary fence of Sir William Romney’s school playing field. The trees have been sponsored by the Woodland Trust and have been specially chosen to provide habitat for native wildlife. This event will take place on Saturday 26th March at 10.30am and will provide a lasting legacy for generations to come. done

New Planters at The Market Place Being the home town of Highgrove and the place where Prince William grew up, we will be commemorating his marriage to Kate Middleton and our entry to the 2011 Britain in Bloom campaign by placing 4 new planters in the Market Place on the new wide pavement area beside the pedestrian crossing. These will be filled with the same style of planting that has been used around the Market Hall – box trees and trailing geraniums. They will bring a vibrant splash of colour to what has become the least colourful area in Tetbury’s town centre. done

Wedding Cake Tree Again to commemorate the Royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, in partnership with the Evening Women’s Institute, we will be planting a Wedding Cake Tree (Cornus Contraversa Variegata)  in the large open area behind St Mary’s Church. With its small creamy-white flowers covering the horizontal branches in May, followed by small black berries in autumn, it will create a stunning sight. done

A New Mural at the old Matbro site in London Road Following the successes of the 2009 and 2010 murals that were created by the children of St Mary’s Primary School to mark Tetbury’s entries to the Britain in Bloom and Heart of England in Bloom campaigns, we have now commissioned another mural to celebrate Tetbury’s entry to the 2011 Britain in Bloom campaign. The boards have always been generously donated by the site owner Jonathan Ede of Builders Ede Ltd and we are hoping that he will feel generous again and sponsor the 2011 edition. The theme for this year’s mural will be simply.. ‘Tetbury in Bloom’ and will show different landmarks of Tetbury literally .....in bloom! The 2009 and 2010 murals now proudly adorn the exterior walls of St Mary’s Primary School. done

Cutwell Wildflower Area To achieve a stunning wildflower display is a lot easier said than done. We have taken advice from wildflower experts at The National Wildflower Centre and David Wassell MBE, retired Heart of England in Bloom judge and in 2011 we are determined to create a ‘wildflower meadow’  area down by the ford in Cutwell.

Once the grass is growing well, come March/April our instructions have been to kill it off, giving extra attention to the docks and leaving a 6 foot margin around the area so as not to interfere with the water course. Killing the grass is a must to achieve success. It will allow the wildflower seeds to get a foot hold and thrive. If we just sow the seeds directly on to the existing grass we will waste the seed as wildflowers are unable to compete with vigorous grasses. Once the grass is dead, we then need to rake the surface and it will be ready to sow a native wildflower mix which with a bit of luck should look stunning come July and August. Well, that’s the plan anyway!! done

If it is successful, we hope to turn the area into a real miniature wildflower meadow.

Daffodil bank in West Street Car Park Each year we try to plant more and more bulbs throughout the town and our plan for 2011 is to plant the bank at the rear of the West Street car park with hundreds of daffodils. done

More Bird Boxes in Tetbury Gardens Tetbury in Bloom have always been keen to do our best for wildlife in and around the town. We heard about The Butterfly Garden, a wonderful place providing help and encouragement for people coping with disablement of any kind, and it was obvious that we should do something together. The Butterfly Garden has a woodworking shop and the students have been busy building things, wood-turning on their new lathe and (critically for us) making sturdy bird boxes from reclaimed timber. So we gave them a challenge and placed an order for their biggest ever batch—we wanted twenty. As soon as they could make them. We are very pleased to say that they have risen to the challenge and we now have a substantial pile of bird residences ready for use.

Half of the bird boxes will be given to pupils at St Mary’s Primary School, whilst the rest will be on our stall on Woolsack Day (unless you come to us and get them first!). done
